I highly recommend you listen to Shinedown’s The Sound of Madness album. Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide is rather good.

Distributed Chaos

Long, long ago, Kashpureff.Org worked on a distributed computing project to determine what the most optimal Golomb Rulers are, in coordination with Distributed.Net. This same history has been turned into Team Chaos Chaos Chaos. And the best part is – you can help the madness! If you’re convinced, you can jump straight to the How? at the end. If you need more reasons… here ya go!

Who is Distributed.net? They are a group of people obsessed with (largely pointless) distributed computing programs, including attempts to decipher encrypted messages in an attempt to win a few grand of prize cash .

What is an Optimal Golomb Ruler? It’s a fancy math thing, and Wikipedia can explain it better than I can…. Ta-da! In a nutshell, they are a fancy mathes thing that benefits radio wave propagation, certain cryptographic keys, and other silly things. Not much practical use, but that’s not the point!

Why bother? Because it makes us look cool!

How? It’s not an instant process, but it’s doable. Just follow a couple easy steps.
Step 1) Download the client. Pick the appropriate OS and platform.
Step 2) Install, configure and run. In Windows, this is easy. Put in your email address, pick if you want to run it all the time(as a service), or only when you’re not there(screensaver). Linux users or similar, open a terminal, use gunzip and tar -xvf, then run dnetc. Option 1, Option 1, email address, save & exit, then re-run dnetc. Done.
Step 3) Wait about 48 hours. This gives plenty of time for your computer(s) to finish and submit a set of work units, and the stats server to do an update(every day around midnight GMT)
Step 4) Request your password. Go to the project page, search for your email, and them scroll down do the bottom of your page and press “Please email me my password”.
Step 5) Login to your account. Use the link that just got emailed to you
Step 6) Join team Chaos Chaos Chaos. Once you’ve logged in, navigate to our team page. Scroll down again, and click “I want to join this team!”. Your previously finished blocks will be automatically added to the team’s stats, no matter how long it’s been since you started. So it’s okay if you wait a week to do this.

A few caveats: Because the point of the project is to do math, your CU usage will jump up to 100%, and your fans will be running full-blast, but it shouldn’t hurt anything. Your power bill may go up a little bit, but no more than the computer running at idle anyway. The client only uses CPU power that would otherwise go to waste, so you will not experience a measurable amount of increased lag(It’s your imagination, seriously. Use a stopwatch if you think otherwise)

Let the Chaos compute!
